The Sauk Fire District was formed in 1960 out of the increased need for fire protection in the greater Sauk Prairie area. Area municipal governments came together to form a Joint Fire District. The joint district allows multiple municipalities to share both resources and the cost of operating a fire department. Each municipality appoints commission members from their area to represent their population. The Sauk Fire District meets 3 time per year to set and manage the annual budget as well as discuss and manage resources of the fire department. The Sauk Fire District contracts with the Sauk City Volunteer Fire Department to provide fire protection for area municipalities which include:
- Village of Sauk City
- Town of Roxbury
- Town of Westpoint
- Town of Prairie du Sac
- Town of Honey Creek
- Town of Sumpter
- Town of Troy
The Sauk Fire District covers parts of three Wisconsin counties, Sauk, Dane, and Columbia, spanning 170+ square miles of south-central Wisconsin’s countryside.
